Masquerade ballroom by emphasismine-d39n9te

The Masquerade Ballroom

The Atebus Revolution Masquerade, often shortened to Masquerade, is an annual Holiday that occurs on Atebus in mid-May.[1] During Masquerade, users wear a mask wearable on their Avatar and dance with other users to gain the holiday Currencies for the Masquerade shops - Steamworks Trinkets for the Steamworks Menagerie and Lounge Trinkets for the Libertine Lounge. The first Masquerade was celebrated in March 2009.[2]

The Pet Color associated with Masquerade is Steamwork - Steamwork was introduced during Masquerade in 2010, and Steamwork pets will most frequently release during Masquerade. Additionally, Cadogres and Endeavors are only available to create during Masquerade.

Masquerade Dances[]

Masquerade Dance sCode

The Masquerade sCode link

The main activity during Masquerade is dancing with other users. Users must wear an item with the word "Mask" in its name on their human avatar in order to dance; the rarity of the item does not matter, nor does its location on the avatar. If you or the user you are attempting to dance with are not wearing a mask, you will receive an error and the dance request will not go through.

You may choose to request a dance with another user by clicking their dance link, either in the Masquerade forums or posted elsewhere on the site through sCode. After requesting a dance, you must wait for the user to accept or deny the request before receiving the holiday currency, trinkets. When you are invited to dance, you will receive an event with a link to a page where you can choose to accept or deny the request; this page will show the avatar of the user who invited you, but not their username. Once a dance has been accepted, the username of the dance partner will be revealed, either on the accept page for the user who was invited or in an event for the user who requested the dance.

Each dance will reward 4-8 steamworks or lounge trinkets to both dance partners. There is a 5-8 minute wait between dances.

Upon receiving an accepted dance, either on the accept page or in an event, you will have the option to visit the dance floor. Visiting the dance floor will bring you to a page showing the Masquerade ballroom, with you and your dance partner's avatar positioned in the center of the dance floor and five random other avatars positioned to the side. If any of these avatars are wearing items from the Backdrop Layer, those items will not appear on the dance floor.

Dancing Buff[]

When dancing with other users, it is possible to gain a dancing Buff for a limited time. This buff shortens the wait time between dances to 2-5 minutes. The dancing buff will appear as a small shoes icon in the buffs section of the user info sidebar widget. Icon buff dancingshoes

Boudewijn Duels[]

Boudewijn Duel

First weapon selection when dueling Boudewijn

When visiting the dance floor for accepted dances, there is a small chance for Boudewijn to attempt to cut in on your dance as of 2015.[3] If this occurs, a popup will appear over the dance floor with the option for you to duel him worded as: "Nay, Sir, I challenge thee to a duel forthwith!" Selecting this option will bring you to a page where you may choose a weapon with which to duel Boudewijn.

Dueling is a mini game similar to Rock, Paper, Scissors; the first to win two rounds is the victor. The weapon options are rapier, dagger, and sword; rapier beats dagger, dagger beats sword, and sword beats rapier. Depending on which weapons were chosen, Boudewijn will have a unique line which indicates who won that round. If you win two rounds, Boudewijn will be defeated and will give you a Bronze Bag of Steamworks Trinkets, which is worth 50 steamworks trinkets when opened. You lose nothing if Boudewijn beats you.

Duel Outcomes[]

Pearl Flat Sword

  • Sword beats rapier
    • If Boudewijn chose sword: "Oh, you've gone for the elegant opal rapier? I'm afraid you are about to hear the sound of ultimate suffering. My flat sword will snap your rapier in half!"
    • If you chose sword: "Ee gad, that's no good for me at all! My rapier bends to the strength of your sword! I may have a weak blade, but my desire to cut in on dances is as strong as ever."
Weapon opalrapier

Elegant Opal Rapier

  • Rapier beats dagger
    • If Boudewijn chose rapier: "Ahh, you've picked the ruby dagger. A fitting choice for a blaggard such as yourself. Unfortunately not a match for elegant rapier! Sink me, your decisions have betrayed you!"
Weapon rubydagger

Ruby Dagger

  • Dagger beats sword
    • If Boudewijn chose dagger: "The pearl flat sword? Money and titles may be hereditary, but brains are certainly not. I can easily out maneuver you with my dagger! En garde!"
    • If you chose dagger: "You've chosen the ruby dagger? You're so... elusive against my pearl flat sword. What a dreadful inconvenience. I'll get you next time!"
  • Tie: "How monstrously intolerable, there's nothing for it but to choose our weapons again!"
  • If Boudewijn wins: "Mercy is the mark of a great man. Guess I'm just an alright man, because I'll take your dance partner from you now whilst you skulk away, empty handed!"
  • If you win: "Od's fish, m'dear, go ahead and take my trinkets and be off with you! I'll find somebody else to steal a dance from!"

Mystery Dances[]

Mystery dances are a feature introduced in 2020 which pairs you with a random user for an immediate dance.[4] There is no accept or deny option for a mystery dance; instead, both dance partners immediately receive the same rewards. The randomly chosen dance partner will receive an event notifying them of who danced with them and the rewards given. Both dance partners also have the option to visit the dance floor. It is possible to do one mystery dance every 15 minutes; this is a separate cool down time from choosing a dance partner.

Mystery dances have a larger reward pool than chosen dances. The possible rewards are:

Masquerade Forums[]

I masque

Masq. Forum Icon

As with most Holidays, Masquerade has a dedicated Forum section that opens for the duration of the event. The Masquerade forums are unique, however, in that they do not display any usernames or Forum Titles. All posts made on the Masquerade forums include an event link under the avatar which allow you to request a dance from the user; this link is identical in appearance to the Masquerade sCode except that it omits the username.

Signatures and forum images are still visible in the Masquerade forums; if a user has posted their username anywhere in their signature, such as in the Masquerade sCode, it will still display. It also possible to use the ping button located on the header of a post to determine the username of a poster.

Masquerade Shops[]

Icon masquerade

There are three shops associated with Masquerade, all located in Ziara City. The Steamworks Menagerie and Libertine Lounge take Masquerade's holiday Currencies, and are open year round. Migrating Masks is a Restocking shop which takes sP and is only open during Masquerade.

Steamworks Menagerie[]

The Steamworks Menagerie is the shop that takes Steamworks Trinkets. It stocks a variety of Item types, though typically not Food. Items that stock in the Steamworks Menagerie most often have a Steampunk or, as of 2017, Cyberpunk theme to them.[5] These two different aesthetics developed on Atebus due to its independence from Subeta.[6][7]

It is possible to purchase bags of lounge trinkets from the 2018 section of the Steamworks Menagerie. The exchange rate is 1 lounge trinket for each 2 steamworks trinkets paid.

Libertine Lounge[]

The Libertine Lounge is the shop that takes Lounge Trinkets. It stocks Food, particularly fancy hors d'oeuvres and alcoholic mixed drinks. Some items available at the Libertine Lounge are wearable, but the majority are food only. The Libertine Lounge receives considerably less new items each year than the Steamworks Menagerie.

It is possible to purchase steamworks trinkets from the Libertine Lounge, for an exchange rate of 1 steamwork trinket for each 2 lounge trinkets paid. Single steamworks trinkets can be purchased from the 2010 section, while bags of steamworks trinkets can be purchased from the 2011 section.

Migrating Masks[]

Migrating Masks is a shop which restocks mask wearables purchasable for sP. The shop is only open for the duration of Masquerade. It typically receives a small amount of new stock at the start of the holiday. Migrating Masks was introduced in 2013.[8] Masks previously restocked in the Holiday Shop during Masquerade before that shop's Retirement.

Masquerade Opponents[]

Masquerade has one set of reoccurring Battle Opponents, the panzer hydra. There are five stages of the opponent that range from easy to impossible difficulty. The first stage, Panzer Hydra (Single-Headed), is automatically available in the event tab when active. The four other opponents are unlocked through Challenger Summoner items earned from achievements for defeating the previous opponent 10 times. The challengers cannot be unlocked or battled outside of masquerade; if they have already been unlocked, they will reappear in the event tab when next active.

Masquerade History[]

Masquerade is celebrated each year on Atebus in memory of its revolution for independence from Subeta. Atebus' original colonies were established by Subetan monarchs, who wished to profit from the resources which could be mined there. These colonies slowly grew separate from Subeta as they began to develop their own culture and steam based technologies. However, the monarchs did not want to lose their steady flow of resources and created various regulations to attempt to quell the budding revolution. The result of this was merely that the revolution moved underground. While laborers and researchers developed weapons in secret, the high society members of Atebus gathered intel during balls with the elite of Subeta. The annual Masquerade is a way of recreating and celebrating those balls that ended up being pivotal in their fight for independence.[9]

Masquerade Plots[]

Two major Plots have occurred during Masquerade in 2010 and 2013.

Atebus Masquerade Murder[]

Main article: Atebus Masquerade Murder

In 2010, users helped Inspector Thorpe investigate the murder of Vernon Yun. Vernon was murdered after he announced he would be revealing a surprise during the ball. Users were able to question NPCs and investigate different areas of the Ballroom to gain clues, and eventually present their findings to Inspector Thorpe. It was then revealed that Vernon's business partner Marcel Martenez had murdered him to prevent Vernon from revealing his discovery of Yunium Ore in the Coda Caves. Marcel had been secretly working for Blackmoon Corp to develop weapons with Vernon's Yunium Ore technology, and did not want Vernon to ruin the deal by making it public knowledge that that same technology had created his robot son, Isaac. After being discovered, Marcel attacked in a mechanized suit and users were able to battle Marcel in a Boss Battle.

Isaac and Vernon's human son, Jules, along with Jules' friends, teamed together to create Steamwork pets using Vernon's technology.[10]

Masquerade: Ziara History[]

Main article: Masquerade: Ziara History

In 2013, users once again assist Inspector Thorpe with an investigation, this time regarding the discovery of a Crash Site of a Ziaran Ladies plane in the Galaxan Wastes. When the Pilot is found still alive, despite having vanished 25 years prior, Inspector Thorpe contacts the Space Nomads for information regarding the Time Rifts that often form on Atebus. Itallo then grants the user a Time Travel Device that will stabilize the rifts and allow them to travel back in time to investigate the crash further. As a test, the user tries to make a small change to the timeline and ends up preventing the murder of Vernon Yun. The user then spends several days meeting each of the captains of the six Atebus fighter squadrons: Marco of the Wild Aces; Addie of the Fighting Festers; Mal of the Soaring Mallarchies; Rory of the Stingers; Char of the Ziaran Ladies; and Jamie of the Jolly Rogers. After Itallo is attacked in the present, the user realizes that Lia is actually Jamie, who has been working with the space pirates to sabotage the other squadrons and assassinate the Chancellor of Subeta. With the help of young Inspector Thorpe, Jamie is arrested at the Masquerade ball before she can get to the chancellor. After returning to the present, the rift that the user was using to travel through time collapses.

A similar rift opened during Masquerade in 2019, resulting in the permanent Rift feature and the color Riftborn.[11][12]
